Nine months ago, four Neosho High School kids set out with one goal in mind: to be the best in the nation. The work of Ava Nordman, a senior at Marquette High School in the Rockwood School District, will be featured in the 2023 AP Art and Design Digital Exhibit. Nordman is one of 50 students from around the world chosen for this exhibit, out of a pool of more than 74,000 submitted portfolios.

A group of scientists prepared to search for tagged animals in Forest Park on a recent warm November Wednesday. Well, they weren’t all scientists — at least not yet. The Living Lab team has been bringing classes to Forest Park for a few years, to try to get more students interested in nature and science. The Forest Park Living Lab works to understand the wildlife that calls the park home.

As of Wednesday, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program is available to every child — age 5 and under — living in Missouri. Children enrolled by a parent will receive an age-appropriate book delivered to their home by mail each month at no cost to the family. Missouri is only the 14th state to serve children in all of its ZIP codes.

A student-run coffee shop is teaching a group of Missouri high school seniors the grind of running a business. Fort Osage School District students, near Kansas City, operate the shop as part of their entrepreneurial class. The district, along with students from surrounding schools, learn about business plans. They handle the marketing of the shop. They intern at a business.

A high school program is inspiring the next generation of pilots to aim high. The Red Tail Cadet Program at Ferguson Florissant School District, near St. Louis, teaches students how to fly the friendly skies. The program includes six weeks of flying during the summer, four days a week. Students practice maneuvers, including steep turns and banks.

In her free time, Paseo High School senior Kai Jackson likes to make meals for her classmates. But through the Kids Feeding Kids program with Pete's Garden, she's able to serve a larger group. The class at Manual Career Technical Center teaches students their way around a professional kitchen with professional chefs as teachers, while the food they whip up goes to those facing food insecurity.

Three school districts around the Ozarks and Kansas City joined forces in a unique initiative to connect students from rural and urban schools and share their culture through art and food. The project began in the spring of 2022 and collected recipes, stories, and artwork from students at Lebanon, Waynesville, and Northeast Kansas City High School.

A Joplin teacher is taking her love of science to the national stage. Karisa Boyer is one of just three teachers across the country chosen as a Science Ambassador. It’s a project of Science News Learning, which provides current scientific research to incorporate into classroom learning. Boyer will use that research to develop new lesson plans for classrooms nationwide.
